The beginnings of Katowice date back to the 16th century when it was a farming and blacksmithing center. Rapid development began in the mid-19th century with the growth of industry and the introduction of a railway line to the city. Katowice obtained city rights on September 11, 1865. From 1742, the city belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia and later Germany. After 1922, the city and the region were incorporated into Poland. Currently, the city has a population of 290,000 residents.
