(27 Feb 2001) Voice and effects • VOICED BY VERA FRANKL • XFA • Zapatista rebels in Mexico, on a two-week march to Mexico City to lobby Congress on an Indian rights bill, have received a second death threat in as many days. • • Heavy security now surrounds the so-called 'Zapatour' as it makes its way through twelve states. • • It is the first time the ski-masked rebel leader, Subcomandante Marcos, has emerged publicly from the southern state of Chiapas since the Zapatistas launched their revolt for Indian rights on January 1, 1994. • • 00:01 Greeted like a rock star by his fans, the rebel leader known only as Subcomandante Marcos, arrived in Oaxaca state on the third day of the Zapatour. • • 00:10 The tour of peace aims at finally ending the seven year old conflict in Chiapas State. • • 00:15 But Marcos made clear to supporters that the struggle is not yet over. • • 00:18 SOUNDBITE: (Translation from Spanish) • They believe -- those who are powerful and who deceive us and will have us to believe something new -- but they have nothing different in their thoughts nor their methods that they have used for almost five centuries, trying to exterminate us, waging their war of destruction in the name of civilization. • SUPERCAPTION: Subcommander Marcos, Zapatista leader • • 00:38 Security is tight after the Zapatistas received the second death threat in as many days. • • 00:44 Marcos and his entourage left their home state of Chiapas on Sunday on a two week trip by bus, slowly heading to the capital Mexico City. • • 00:50 They are accompanied by hundreds of journalists and foreign observers. • • 00:56 Top of their agenda is the Indian Rights bill - one of three conditions Marcos says must be met before they will renew long-stalled peace talks with the government. • • 01:07 As the tour ploughs on over 3-thousand-500 federal police officers have been posted on route.
