6.4.20| 5:30 PM PDT | Los Angeles, CA | City Hall • The nine straight days of marching in Los Angeles have seasoned local protesters, some of whom - including Black Lives Matter and other coalitions - met with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti last night to renew their insistence on some basic accommodations for under-funded social programs and under-served communities in L.A. It was an old plight - wrangling over city budgetary allocations - except this time there was a stunning new outcome. Garcetti ultimately shocked the activists with two potential game-changers. • First, the citywide curfew would end on Thursday, June 4. And then the olive branch: Garcetti was proposing a significant budget shift, reducing up to $150 million from the annual LAPD budget for use in social programs designed to reduce the need for police. It was the kind of radically outlandish idea that the Wright brothers floated when they first revealed their sketches and prototypes of a machine that they insisted would enable people to fly. Off the ground. With unmoving wings. Absurd! • Today, then, protesters demanding justice for George Floyd and new racial integration and peace initiatives found themselves congregating in downtown L.A., between City Hall and the LAPD Headquarters. Chief of Police Michel Moore went out of his office and addressed the activists in the street, announcing that there will be forthcoming sweeping changes in the way police officers are to be trained, with an emphasis on physical safety. Moore asked the protesters to file complaints with the LAPD if they had endured excessive force during the nine days of protest. marches. He asked for their forgiveness. And then he made a symbolic gesture of unity with the marchers - he knelt and took a knee - twice. • The morning preparations to march yesterday began with the parents of a toddler coaxing their tiny son to touch hands with a National Guardsman in a symbolic gesture of innocent friendliness; everyone who saw it smiled at the innocence and good-natured joy of that moment. Then marchers hit the streets to seek justice: Black Lives Matter, just as they did again today. Tonight they all return to Sunset Vine - to celebrate freedom from curfew and the prospect of future victory. Together. Already LAPD representatives are crying foul, vowing to fight the fragile peace proposal on the basis of economics and self-interest. But for tonight the protesters' spirits are buoyed; they are cautiously optimistic. Tonight we all hope together - hoping for a miracle: unity and reconciliation. • RAW VIDEO - BROADCAST QUALITY VIDEO AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD • Visit https://LA-OC.tv for more photos, video, content download information, weather, and live breaking news in Southern California.
