Assessment of the respiratory rate is an essential clinical skill. It is measured by counting the number of breathes taken across one whole minute (i.e., for a full 60 seconds). If the value measured is lower than the reference range for age, then the patient has bradypnea. If it is above the reference range, then tachypnea.
