When Michelangelo was still a teenager, the particularly enlightened prior of Santo Spirito in Florence, Italy, gave him permission to perform anatomical dissections in the morgue of the convent. In gratitude, Michelangelo gave the prior a wooden crucifix as a gift, which was placed over the high altar of the church.
