In 1968 three Hull fishing trawlers sank in the seas off of the perilous coast of Iceland, with the loss of 58 men. • The women of Hessle Road's fishing community, no strangers to tragedy, decided that enough was enough and, led by the formidable Lillian Bilocca, decided to take on the trawler bosses and demand that immediate saftey measures be put in place. • The campaign, among the most successful in the last 50 years, ensured that these measures were implemented; they gained international media attention and achieved, in a matter of weeks, more than the union's had achieved in decades.
