Gemology, Diamonds and Jewels Course. • Lesson 12: Synthetic Moissanite. • The synthetic Moissanite shown in this video has been sold as a Diamond to an inexperienced Jeweler. But, as you can see in the video, that is a Synthetic Moissanite, in fact it shows doubling. • The doubling of the image can not take place in a real Diamond, since the Diamond is monorefractive, unlike the Synthetic Moissanite which is birifrangent. • There is also natural Moissanite, and that's what the Nobel Henri Moissan discovered in small quantities into a tiny meteorite in Arizona. • But natural Moissanitie is extremely rare and so far has never been found a natural Moissanite of such quality and size that it can be mounted on Jewels. • Synthetic Moissanite is in itself a beautiful Gem that has in its strengths the Dispersion and the Hardness and that can make the Jewels really attractive. • Synthetic Moissanite show double the dispersion shown by Diamonds, having a dispersion value of 0.104, against 0.044 of Diamonds. • Synthetic Moissanite is even harder than Corundum, in fact, while Corundum measure 9 in the Mohs hardness scale, Moissanite measures 9.25. • Unluckily, they are not natural gems and sometimes they were sold as Diamonds mounted on Jewels. • Moissanite was launched in 1997 and initially appeared almost always with near-color shades. • At the beginning, there were available L or M color mostly , but currently there are all sorts of Synthetic Moissanite: from Moissanite D color and IF of purity, to the fancy Moissanite that can exhibit a variety of fascinating colors. • Lately, some thugs are trying to sell big Moissanites as Diamonds, mounted on dated Jewels to make the scam more convincing. The color of these Moissanites is a brownish yellow with vivid saturation, often described with the trade term Champagne . They are trying to sell them like Diamonds, but just the basic Gemology tests are enough to recognize them. • A good Gemmologist never relies completely on the thermal probe, because the results are not always reliable and sometimes the Moissanite fools the pen. The only temperature in the room can distort the results and a mistake like that can be expensive, from an economic point of view and from the point of view of professional embarrassment. • Bottom line: Moissanite must always be analyzed with a beautiful aplanatic and achromatic loupe, but in particular with all the attention that a professional gemologist must never miss. • Moissanite is synthesized through the process of sublimation that is none other than the transition from solid to aeriform state without going through the liquid state. In this case the raw material is silicon carbide, which vaporizes to re-crystallize in a crystal seed, without passing from the liquid state. • The silicon carbide is placed in a part of the crucible and dissolves with heat. The exact details of how this process works specifically have never been revealed. • The Genovese Gemological Institute was set up for educational purposes and with the aim of teaching Gemology to Diamonds and Jewels lovers, in fact the Diamonds course and the Gemology course are our flagship and the Jewels are our passion. • Subscribe to our YouTube channel •    / @istitutodigemmologiagenova1976   to watch the videos of Jewels, Diamonds and Gemology Edelsteine coming out the first of every month. • Gemological Institute of Genoa, the most beloved by surfers. • Jewels, Diamonds and Gemology Course: Become Expert on Gemology and Diamonds. • Subscribe to our channel •    / @istitutodigemmologiagenova1976   so you can watch Jewels, Diamonds and the new Gemology videos we create every first of the month. • Have a great day (and a great night as well)!
