Degeneracy means when number of allocations are less than m+n-1. IBFS is calculated using VAM(Vogel's approximation) method and optimality is checked using Modi method. Modi or u-v method in transportation problem is an optimality test to find out whether initial basic solution is optimal or not. Modi method is a better alternative to find optimal solution than stepping stone because there is no need to find loop and net change in transportation cost for every unoccupied cell. we simply find out u and v values for each row and column respectively(ui+vj=cij). Then for every unoccupied cell we calculate objective function cij-(ui+vj) till all values becomes positive or zero to reach optimality. • Transportation problem discussed in this video is balanced and ibfs is find out using Vam(vogel's approximation) method.
