It was a new concept for me—the idea of having a family as a strategy. Before that, I wanted children because I’m maternal. I wanted babies and imagined the children I’d raise, by name and by individual persona. I was ready. And then, I met my Gothard mentors and learned this new word: quiverfull. • Christians needed to have a mass of children so we’d dominate culture. It was strategic population. These weapons in the culture war would grow to be influential voters, leaders, and examples. Our wombs produced holy fruit for God. It was vital to be open to having as many as possible. • Every concern against this was sweetly, then forcefully, shut down. Never mind health and human capacity. Never mind poverty or family dysfunction. Burdens that slowed baby production could be addressed or skipped. • Critics hate babies. They hate families.
