We’ve played capitalism, and that’s enough! • STORYLINE: • The presidential candidate of the Russian Communist Party, Nikolai Kharitonov, met with soldiers who fought in Ukraine on Thursday as part of his campaign to become Russia's next president. • • Last month, Russia’s national elections commission formally approved Kharitonov's candidacy to compete against President Vladimir Putin in the upcoming presidential election on March 17 that Putin is all but certain to win. • • Kharitonov, who is also a member of the lower house of parliament, was accompanied by Communist Party’s leader Gennady Zyuganov. • • The commission has also approved two other candidates: Leonid Slutsky of the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party and Vladislav Davankov of the New People Party. • • Kharitonov has been critical of some of Putin's domestic policies but has not opposed Russia's military operation in Ukraine. • • Although the Communist candidate typically gets the second-highest vote tally in Russian presidential elections, Kharitonov does not present a significant challenge to Putin.
