It is also known as Rajarajeswara Temple in honor of the Tamil King Raja Raja Chola, who built it. The temple has some amazing features: 216 feet main tower (vimana), a 16 feet monolithic bull (nandhi), a 13 feet lingam, and the apex stone on the tower weighing 80 tons. • Also sometimes called Peruvudaiyar Kovil or Periya Kovil , the temple was also used for storing the King's treasures.
