He's receiving $881 a month and I've talked to friends and their children are getting $1,151 and I don't understand why. • So we explained that it's only you - it's only the 46,000 families who have children at home with them who receive what's called the Room and Board Amount of $881. The other people - who are primarily our clients - we have had benefits increased to $1,151. The $1,151 is composed of two components: shelter plus supplementary benefits. And the shelter component is $489. • So what we do is we prepare a lease between the parents and the child. The child then contributes $500 or $550 a month towards shelter costs or rent - as the lease indicates. Now this rental amount is not income to the parent because they're not in pursuit of profit - so you don't declare this as rental income. The child can't use it on their own tax return for the tenant property tax credit. Nothing changes, everything remains the same and we've done this I think 283 times now. • Overall, that benefit increase has increased benefits for those families by over a million dollars a year and we're very pleased with that work. If we can assist you, I'd be happy to have received the call.
