http://www.aic.gov.au/en/events/semin... • Despite the investment of considerable resources over the past two decades, the overrepresentation of Indigenous Australians in the criminal and juvenile justice systems persists. An important strategy for addressing overrepresentation has been Indigenous participation in sentencing. While formalized Indigenous courts and sentencing circles have been in place for over a decade, the first formal Children's Indigenous Court - the Children's Koori Court of Victoria - began operation at the end of 2005.The two major goals of the court are to reduce recidivism (and, in turn, overrepresentation) and to increase Indigenous ownership of the administration of justice. An evaluation completed in 2009 sought to evaluate the extent to which the objectives flowing from these goals was realised. This seminar will report on the evaluation, its findings and the considerable challenges encountered in undertaking the study.
