In this week's video lesson, I'm going to teach you about Coherence and Cohesion. To be honest, this might be a difficult lesson for many of you to understand, but it is important information and I think you will be quite surprised. • Most people tend to think of Coherence and Cohesion as being a matter of structure, but this is a little reductive. In fact, it is about much more than that. I'm going to analyse the band descriptors for you in order to break CC down into 5 separate parts: organisation, progression, cohesive devices, referencing, and paragraphing. • I'm also going to talk about how there are some more complicated factors like overlap with other parts of the marking rubric. I will try to back all of this up with evidence (from a study supported by IELTS) and I will try to show everything clearly with examples. • Coherence and Cohesion is a vast and difficult topic, but understanding it could really help you to get a better score. If you've spent a lot of time studying IELTS but see little improvement in your grade, it might be partly because your writing features problems in one of the abovementioned 5 areas. • In this video, I mentioned a few sources of information that may be useful or interesting to you: • The study that I cited twice: https://www.ielts.org/-/media/researc... • Shelly Cornick's ebook: https://blog.myieltsclassroom.com/iel... • My own article on cohesive devices: https://ted-ielts.com/cohesive-devices/ • My book, How to Write the Perfect Essay for IELTS: https://ted-ielts.com/books • IELTS band descriptions for task 2: https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/... • IELTS band descriptions for task 1: https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/... • As always, I have divided this lesson into chapters, which you can see below.
