The debate about abortion is heated and dividing. To follow up our existing video about the Pro-Choice arguments (you can see that here…. http://tinyurl.com/nlmwmlc ) we have produced The Five Most Powerful Pro-Life Arguments. Two things become one. The zygote is composed of human DNA and other human molecules, so its nature is undeniably human and not some other species. Thus, human life begins at conception. It is also quite clear that the earliest human embryo is biologically alive. It fulfills the four criteria needed to establish biological life: metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction. • Preservation of Life • The first and foremost instinct of humans is preservation of life. This begins with self-preservation, and extends to all humanity through domestic bonds and realization of a like nature. Pregnancy termination stops the beating heart of a growing human being and is in direct contradiction to this most basic premise of human nature. It forsakes natural law as nearly every animal (especially mammals) has natural parental instincts. Abortions go against this instinct and it one of the only instances in nature that does so. • Women’s Health • Abortion increases the likelihood that women will develop breast cancer. In early pregnancy, levels of estrogen increase, leading to breast growth in preparation for breastfeeding. Eight medical organizations, including the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute and the National Physicians Center for Family Resources, have recognized the connection between abortion and breast cancer. On top of this a 2002 study of more than 173,000 American women found that women who aborted were 154% more likely to commit suicide than women who carried to term. • Adoption Demands • Over two million couples are waiting to adopt, and only 134,000 US children were available to be adopted as of June 2002. Obviously supply doesn’t meet demand. The percentage of infants given up for adoption has declined from 9% of those born before 1973 to 1% of those born between 1996 and 2002. In the same time the rate of abortions have soared. Instead of having the option to abort, women should give their unwanted babies to people who cannot conceive. This would make many willing parents incredibly happy. • Medicine Sees the Fetus as a Person • Medicine, too, confirms the existence of the child before birth as a distinct human person. Fetal surgery has become a medical specialty, and includes the separate provision of anesthesia to the baby. You can cite some of the surgeries now performed on children before their birth, such as shunting to bypass an obstructed urinary tract and treatment of congenital heart disease. There are many others. So if medicine sees fetuses as human beings then surely that’s what they are and should be treated as such. Anything else would be hypocritical and without merit.
