We started our smart mirror with just a tv and dakboard but after a year we decided to do a Magic Mirror on raspberry pi. Once we had our raspberry pi and had magic mirror installed we connected it to the tv, built a pine frame, stained the frame, purchased a custom sized 2 way mirror, and assembled everything. Magic mirror isn't as user friendly as Dakboard but with a little bit of time you'll get there.
