Today we’ll be talking about one of the four Cs of diamonds: cut. When diamond people refer to cut, they are talking about the dimensions, angles and percentages of the diamond. A well cut diamond will be more brilliant and have more fire than a diamond which isn’t cut as well. • IRA: One could say that cut is the most important aspect of diamonds. After all, their fire and brilliance are what makes them so alluring. All the numbers and percentages can be confusing, but they are very important. We’ll try to simplify things for you and put you on the path to a sparkly diamond. • MIKE: The most important number you need to know is the depth percentage. The depth of the diamond is the measurement from the bottom, or culet, of the diamond to the top. Depth percentage tells you how deep the diamond is in relationship to the length and width. • MIKE: Generally speaking, you are better off with less of the diamond weight coming from the depth and more coming from the length and width, or diameter, of the diamond. A diamond with a lower depth percentage will usually be more brilliant and look larger to the eye. If you are purchasing a round diamond, try to find something in the 58.5-62.5% range. • MIKE: The next number people see is the table percentage. The table is the large facet on the top of the diamond, The table top if you will. A table that is too large or too small will not refract light as well as it should. For a round diamond, we try to stay in the 54-59% range. • MIKE: But thankfully with round diamonds, if you’re buying a diamond with a GIA or AGS certificate, you can pretty much rely on their assessment of cut. If the round diamond is certified by GIA, stick to Excellent cut grades or if it’s AGS stick to what they refer to as Ideal. Those are just two different words that each lab uses to refer to their top cut grade. • IRA: When purchasing a non-round diamond like a princess or cushion cut, the length and width of the diamond come into play. On the GIA certificate you can see 3 numbers like what you see on the screen. For round diamonds the first two numbers are a measurement of the diameter taken at two different places. Since round diamonds are perfectly symmetrical, these numbers don’t matter much. • IRA: Fancy shape diamonds, on the other hand, are not uniform. Those first two numbers represent the length and width of the diamond. Some diamonds, like a princess or asscher cut, are meant to be square. You want the those two numbers to be pretty close. A cushion cut is more flexible. Some people like them square, others like them to be a bit rectangular. • MIKE: Once you decide which shape diamond you prefer, be sure to check out our article for that specific shape.
