Hi guys! In this video, let me take a bit of a diversion from my usual topics by a brief review of my new dictionary, the Collins English Dictionary 14th Edition Unabridged. I bought it from amazon since I wanted to have an updated dictionary that contain the new words and terms that seem to be everywhere these days in social media, print, and TV. I have always had a fondness for English dictionaries and this is my very first unabridged version. I purchased it out of my own pocket. I am not an English expert, so my focus was more from the perspective of a regular joe, with a bit of background on college dictionaries. • 00:00 purpose • 00:42 price and size • 01:07 book cover design • 01:27 paper and print quality • 01:55 front matter • 02:21 sample entries IPA pronunciation • 02:43 CollinsFedra typeface appearance • 03:07 order of senses etymologies • 03:37 Collins did away with syllabification • 04:29 main disadvantage: text only, no drawings or photos • 04:36 main strength: superb depth of entries and sub-entries • 05:09 finding a word as a sub-entry • 05:50 some common and rare words may not make it yet • 06:36 why I need a printed dictionary • 07:02 is it worth buying? • 07:50 end • The Collins Dictionary contains more than 732,000 total number of words, of which 1700 are new words and meanings.
