What’s this moving flash of green in the tree? It’s our most common lizard species, the Carolina Anole. Mistakenly called chameleons, they can change color from green to brown and back, but it has more to do with temperature and social interaction than background. Anoles have toepads and claws for easy climbing and fast running. Predators of anoles include birds, spiders, and even cats~ it’s a reason to keep cats inside. Males have a bright pink patch on their throat called a dewlap, which they can extend to attract females and warn other males out of their territories. Females have a pale stripe running the length of their body. They are ambush hunters, remaining still or moving slowly until insect prey is nearby , when they make a grab for it. They’ll prey on insects larger than you’d think. This one is working on a large bee. More quick nature videos at https://naturewalkswithjudy.com/
