Firstly, by focussing on our breathing, we can help to counteract circling thoughts, which often leads to sleep problems. Because if we focus on counting, we can think about something else at the same time. • By completely emptying the lungs, excess carbon dioxide can escape and fresh air can enter. This means that our heart no longer has to work quite so hard. It allows our heart rate to fall below 60 beats per minute, which should be ideal for falling asleep. • It's not so important to stick to the exact times of four, seven and eight seconds, it's more about the ratio of inhalation, stop and exhalation. And if you believe the headlines on the internet, you can fall asleep within a minute. • I often do 4 rounds in bed before going straight to sleep and I definitely have the feeling that I can fall asleep more quickly this way.
