Welcome to All of History! • Physicians and other medical practitioners used a number of different treatments both in curing their patients’ ills and in attempting to prevent illnesses. Some of these treatments, such as dietary guidance, bleeding, and cautery, were corrective measures designed to maintain or restore a patient’s health by adjusting his or her humoral balances. Ingesting or applying herbs or other medicines were also used to correct humoral imbalances but they were more commonly used to directly treat and relieve specific illnesses. Because of its extreme risks, surgery was usually a treatment of last resort, used only for the most serious of conditions that would respond to no other form of treatment. And, finally, some treatments involved reciting prayers or incantations to appeal for divine or supernatural intervention. • Diet was an important part of medieval medicine. As mentioned before, diet was one of the factors deemed to affect a person’s humors so the physician often reviewed his patient’s diet when assessing his or her health. Then, to treat an existing illness or to keep the patient in good health, the physician prescribed a dietary regimen designed to restore or maintain a healthy balance of humors. • 00:00 Medical Treatments • 40:06 Mental Illnesses • 43:06 Women and Medicine • 49:51 Hospitals • #history #allofhistory #historychannel #documentary
