Some birds say their names like a Pokemon. Let's hear about birds who are named for their sounds! Please subscribe to continue learning what makes life AWESOME: https://BioBush.tv/subscribe • These birds all have their names derived from the sounds they make. It's called an onomatopoeia. • I think it's interesting to see how people interpret bird sounds. And it's not unique to a specific culture. These names come from around the world. Even the native names sometimes use this strategy. For example, the Chickadee is named gijigijigaaneshiinh in Ojibwe, which appears to be based on the sound. Or the English Kookaburra derives from and Wiradjuri Guuguubarra, which in turn derives from the birds' call. • One special case I couldn't elaborate on in the video: the Morepork. It's an owl with a two-note call that SOMEBODY thought sounded like More Pork . The Māori people of New Zealand named the bird Ruru. This name is objectively better. It's more respectful and more ACCURATE as well. If there's a chance, we should officially rename it the Ruru. Thank you. • If you would like to share this video, the custom link is https://BioBush.tv/soundnames • • Copyright • Audio Song of the Bobolink by nikobrown5, via Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/nikobro....
