The novel María written by Jorge Isaacs tells the story of a romance between the author and his cousin María, set in the El Paraíso hacienda in Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The detailed description of the landscapes in the novel aroused the interest of the Japanese, who became the first Japanese immigrants to Colombia in the 1920s. These immigrants settled in Valle del Cauca and formed an agricultural colony called El Jagual.
