Family Tree DNA's new test is called The Big Y and it's going to help every DNA study get to the bottom of their origins. It's a full Y sequence test and is supposed to test for as many as 25,000 SNPs on the Y Chromosome. • I talk more about the importance of SNPs at this link http://www.stclairresearch.com/conten... on the St. Clair Research Study. • Over the past 6 years or so, SNP testing has made huge leaps possible in genetic genealogy. But many of our lineages are still nowhere near knowing any more about their histories because their SNPs are stuck sometime 2,500 years ago or more. Those in our family, like the Alexander Sinkler Lineage who have the L193 SNP, know a great deal more. This SNP is dated to between 1,200 AD and 800 AD. That puts it within the timeframe of medieval records, so names who show up matching each other with this SNP and also show up giving gifts to the same medieval Norman priories and abbeys, can begin to focus their research and get something close to an answer. • This video gets into some detail about how we'll use the Big Y test to look for connections between 'surnames of interest' in the SNP matches.
