It is believed that the name Kottayam is derived from the combination of Malayalam words kott (fort) and akam (inside), and could be translated as the interior of the fort .Kottayam is situated in the basin of the Meenachil River and in the basin of the Vembanad backwaters, which are formed from several streams in the Western Ghats in Idukki district. • Changanacherry is a municipal town in Kottayam district in the state of Kerala, India, located 18 km south of Kottayam and 8 km north of Thiruvalla on the Main Central road. A large percentage of population from Changanacherry resides abroad in the Gulf, Europe and America.
