Do you know the difference between an abdominoplasty and lipectomy? It can be a bit confusing if you aren’t familiar with medical terms. In today’s YouTube video, Dr. Bernard Beldholm, FRACS explains the difference so you can walk into your consultation with confidence. • Part of the reason patients get confused between abdominoplasty (aka tummy tuck) and lipectomy is because of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) in Australia. For those of you wondering ‘Is a tummy tuck covered by Medicare in Australia’, the answer is yes, but only for post weight loss patients who meet certain criteria. • The MBS website says this: Lipectomy, excision of skin and subcutaneous tissue associated with redundant abdominal skin and fat that is a direct consequence of significant weight loss, in conjunction with a radical abdominoplasty [...], with or without repair of musculoaponeurotic layer and transposition of umbilicus, not being a service associated with a service to which item 30165, 30168, 30171, 30172, 30176, 30179, 45530, 45564 or 45565 applies, if: (a) there is intertrigo or another skin condition that risks loss of skin integrity and has failed 3 months of conventional (or non surgical) treatment; and (b) the redundant skin and fat interferes with the activities of daily living; and (c) the weight has been stable for at least 6 months following significant weight loss prior to the lipectomy . • Does your brain hurt yet? • Here's where things get even more confusing. The MBS refers to all eligible tummy tucks as lipectomy. A lipectomy by definition is cutting away fat and skin only. However, surgeons may use other terms during a consultation. One example is a classic tummy tuck, which is technically a lipectomy of the abdomen, or an apronectomy, which is just a lipectomy of the lower abdomen. • The truth is, many kinds of tummy tucks that you can get a discount for do much more than simply remove fat and skin. For example, Dr. Beldholm offers a Sculpt tummy tuck, which not only removes excess fat and skin, but also involves extensive VASER liposculpture, tightens the skin, repairs torn ab muscles, and sculpts the abdomen. • And while a classic tummy tuck (abdominal lipectomy) involves fat and skin removal on the abdomen, you can get a lipectomy on many other trouble areas of the body to remove loose skin and extra fat anywhere you need it. Types of lipectomy include brachioplasty (arm lift), apronectomy (lower abdomen lipectomy), belt lipectomy (body lift), and inner thigh lipectomy (inner thigh lift). • Find out more in this article: • https://beldholm.com.au/body-contouri...
