(1 Jun 2011) SHOTLIST • 1. ICTY spokesperson Nerma Jelacic walks up to microphones outside ICTY building • 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Nerma Jelacic, ICTY spokesperson • As you know Mladic is now in the detention unit of the ICTY, he has undergone the regular proceedings so an indictment has been given to him. He has been introduced to the rules governing the life in the ICTY detention unit as well as the work of the tribunal and he has undergone a thorough medical examination. He was put in his cell and he will remain in the detention unit until it is time for his initial appearance here in the court. • (Q: Can you give us some more details about when we can expect him to appear at the court here?) • It will certainly happen as soon as practicably possible so within the next couple of days. • (Q: What are the results of the medical examinations?) • I am unable to discuss the detainees' medical state without their permission. However I can assure you that we are confident that he has access to the best possible medical care both in the detention unit where we have our own doctor and within the penitentiary hospital in a wider Dutch system as well as in the civilian hospitals in the Netherlands. • (Q: Is there a defence team set for Mladic yet?) • At this moment I can say that he was introduced to the rights that govern the set up of the defence team so he has also been given a list of the defence council who are already qualified and practising before the ICTY. I am unable to say whether he has chosen one yet or not. We will be able to see very soon what happens with that regard. • (Q: What did he have for breakfast?) • I am unable to discuss those details. • (Q: What are the conditions of his detention? Can you just describe where he is living?) • The conditions of detention are the same for all of the accused. We have released some photographs and media images of those. The detention is functioning in accordance with the highest international standards, in accordance with the European Convention of the Human Rights. The cells are exactly the same for each one of the accused and as it is a detention facility they only spend the night hours in the cell itself. They are able, on a normal day, to mix with those who are in the same wing as any accused during the day hours if they are not in a court attending trial. • (Q: How long will he stay in an isolated cell? And is that a normal procedure?) • It is absolutely normal procedure, every accused upon arrival is put in isolation for the first few days of their life here. So I am unable to say exactly how long it would be but it would be a few days while he is being watched by our officials. • 3. Jelacic walks away • STORYLINE • Judges at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal have scheduled Ratko Mladic's arraignment for Friday, following his extradition from Serbia to the U.N. court. • Dutch Judge Alphons Orie signed the order early on Wednesday, after the former Bosnian Serb military chief spent his first night in an isolation cell. • At the hearing on Friday morning, Mladic will be asked to enter pleas to 11 charges, including genocide, for allegedly masterminding Bosnian Serb atrocities throughout the 1992-95 Bosnian war. • After Mladic's arrival from Belgrade on Tuesday evening, war crimes tribunal spokeswoman Nerma Jelacic said staff handed Mladic his indictment and explained the rules and procedures to him. • She said isolation was standard for new arrivals at the prison. • Mladic also was given a list of defence lawyers who could help him through the initial proceedings of the war crimes court. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter:   / ap_archive   • Facebook:   / aparchives    • Instagram:   / apnews   • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
