When Zoroastrianism became popular in Persia around 600 BCE, Ahura Mazda became its supreme deity or god. The Persians revered him as the creator of the earth, the heavens, and humanity, as well as the source of all goodness and happiness on the planet. Ahura Mazda created six divine beings, or angels, to assist him in spreading goodness and ruling the universe. Zurvanism, a now-extinct branch of Zoroastrianism, viewed Ahura Mazda and the evil spirit Ahriman, also known as Angra Mainyu, as two opposite-but-equal twin spirits of good and evil battling for control of the world. Because Ahura Mazda is the supreme god of the Zoroastrians, he is frequently compared to the main gods of other religions. For example, the ancient Greeks thought Ahura Mazda was simply another name for Zeus. However, unlike the ancient Greeks and Romans, Zoroastrians believed in free will and did not believe that fate or the interference of gods determined a person's destiny. Ahura Mazda was also associated with light and fire, both of which are symbols of truth and wisdom. For this reason, Zoroastrians would frequently pray with a flame or other source of light as the focal point of their prayers. The most commonly associated Zoroastrian symbol is an image of Ahura Mazda with eagle-like wings and tail.
