(1 Apr 1996) T/I: 11:12:38 • One kilo of heroin and five kilos of cocaine worth several million dollars were found in the stomachs of two men arriving at Moscow's international Sheremetevo airport last week. But this was just one instance of the plague of drug trafficking which is increasing in Russia. People carry drugs in the false bottoms of suitcases; on their persons; inside hollowed-out shoes and even in • condoms which people swallow. The carriers are called mules in the drug slang. Russian police have arrested numerous mules in the past few month. In this latest case, X-rays showed small plastic capsules in the suspects' stomachs. Police helped nature along by giving the men lots of castor oil. The two suspects, both African men travelling from Latin America, were immediately arrested and taken into custody. Drug smugglers can receive up to 5 years in a • labour camp where conditions are dire. Drug trafficking into Russia has exploded in the past few years due to a lapse in trade regulations and enforcement as Russia moves towards a market economy.
