Monastiraki in Greek means small monastery and the reason is that once in the central square there was a large monastery. Monastiraki together with Plaka are two of the most picturesque areas of the center of Athens. In Monastiraki there are many touristic shops with souvenirs, sandals, T-shirts, etc. but also many high street jewellery stores with handmade gold and silver jewellery. In Monastiraki there are ancient ruins of the Library of Hadrian, the Roman agora and the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos. • Monastiraki square is a lively place that gathers a lot of people during day and night. In the small alleys and pedestrian streets of the area, in addition to the shops you will find many taverns, souvlaki restaurants, shops with sweets and ice cream but also cafes and bars with a wonderful view of the Acropolis. • Next to the metro station located in Monastiraki Square, is where the flea market of Monastiraki starts and it ends in Abyssinia Square. Here you will find many shops that sell touristic and sports clothes and shoes original or imitations at much lower prices than the originals.
