Zen meditation, or Zazen, is a central practice in Zen Buddhism focused on cultivating a deep state of presence and awareness. Unlike many forms of meditation that involve visualization or focusing on specific ideas, Zen meditation emphasizes just sitting in a state of mindfulness without attachment to thoughts, feelings, or desires as they arise. • The practice typically involves sitting on a cushion, or zafu, with a straight spine, hands resting in a cosmic mudra (a symbolic hand gesture), and eyes partially closed. Attention is gently brought to the breath, often counting each inhale and exhale, while the practitioner observes thoughts or sensations without judgment, letting them pass naturally without engaging with them. This process is meant to bring the practitioner into a state of inner clarity and calm, helping cultivate an open, accepting mind. • The ultimate aim of Zen meditation is satori, or insight into one's true nature, which is said to reveal a profound experience of unity with all things and freedom from attachments.
