The Štrbské Pleso to Štrba rack railway is a 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) gauge railway located in Slovakia’s scenic High Tatra Mountains. It was built in 1896 and reconstructed in 1970. At the valley terminus (Štrba), it connects to the standard-gauge main line between Bratislava and Košice, and at the mountain terminus (Štrbské Pleso), it connects to the Tatra Electric Railway. • During the Great Depression traffic declined with the railway closing on 14th September 1932. The line was dismantled in the 1940’s. • With the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships due to take place in 1970 at Štrbské Pleso, plans were considered for a new rack railway, resulting in the line re-opening using two-thirds of the original route with the rest on an entirely new alignment. In Štrbské Pleso, a new joint railway station shared with the Tatra Electric Railway was constructed. 1500 V DC overhead electrification, as used on the Tatra Electric Railway was chosen to power the new electric multiple units supplied by SLM. • For more information, please click on this link - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0t...
