Learn the law in your state – A lawyer is always a great option when facing a legal challenge. A good mediator, too, will be able to tell you how the alimony laws work in your state. • 2. List your expenses – Don’t let your emotions effect the numbers. Use real expenses. Where you don’t know exactly what your future expenses will be, use reasonable projections. Don’t pad your numbers; but don’t be too skimpy, either. • 3. Be nice to your spouse – You won’t win your alimony negotiation being nasty. Now is the time to show some appreciation.
