SEARCH FOR A DEAD MAN • Mullah Omar…The so called Man without a Face, the Supreme Leader of the Taliban who the US and its allies have been trying to capture for fourteen years. A survivor who escaped many attempts to kill or capture him for over a decade. But days ago, it was confirmed that the mysterious and elusive Mullah Omar has been dead for two years. The Afghan intelligence service announced that Mullah Omar died in Karachi, Pakistan in April 2013. Just as he eluded his enemies throughout his life, Mullah Omar continued to elude them long after his death. Even the world’s most advanced intelligence agencies were left baffled. • LEADING TALIBAN FROM THE SHADOWS • Mullah Omar rose to prominence in the 1980s, resisting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The war claimed his right eye, but he continued to live his life on the battlefield. He became the Taliban’s Supreme Leader in 1996. After the 9/11 attacks on New York’s World Trade Center, Omar refused to give up Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. A US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 forced Omar underground. Omar was to continue leading the Taliban from the shadows. His evasive tactics caused much speculation over his whereabouts. False reports of his death emerged twice before 2011. The US set a ten million dollar reward for his capture, yet he managed to remain at large until his death. • AFGHAN PEACE TALKS IN DOUBT • Omar’s death has raised questions on the peace process with the Afghan government. Taliban officials announced Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour as the group’s new leader. Mullah Mansour, a former detainee in Pakistan, was repatriated to Afghanistan in 2006. He had served as the Taliban’s governor of Kandahar Province since 2007. Mullah Omar’s son Muhammad Yaqoob, who was also a contender for the spot, was sidelined. Mullah Mansour, a supporter of the peace process, is expected to continue talks with the Afghan government.
