Rolf Harris wrote this song in 1965 with Frank Roosen, a Dutchman in Vancouver, Canada. • It was voted the fourth best Australian single of all time in a 2004 poll. • I remember seeing Rolf Harris perform this song may times using an artificial leg as a prop. He wore a long coat that came down to the knees, and it was not easy to tell which was hte fake leg. He kept both hands in his pockets, one of which operated the third leg. As he sang he walked around the stage putting his middle foot forward, then his two side feet, and sometimes standing on the middle leg and sticking out both the others. • I make no attempt to do Rolf Harris's act, but the words themselves make this a song worth doing. • This song is a favourite of my one-and-a-half-year-old grandson. He probably doesn't understand what it's about ( though I have shown him videos of Rolf Harris doing it) but he likes the deedle-eedle-eedle-um bits. • Lyrics and chords: • G ................... C • I'm Jake the Peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um, • ........................ G • With my extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um, • ................... F • Wherever I go through rain and snow • ................... C • The people always let me know. • G ......................... C • There's Jake the peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um, • .............. G ..... C • With his extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle. • ..................................................... F • The day that I born, oh boy, my father nearly died, • ....... G ................................................ C • He couldn't get my nappies on, no matter how he tried, • ............................................................. F • 'Cos I was born with a extra leg, and since that day begun, • .............. G ............................................................ G7 ........................ C • I had to learn to stand on my own three feet, believe me that's no fun. • • I had a dreadful childhood, really, I s'pose I shouldn't moan, • Each time they had a three legged race, I won it on me own, • And also I got popular, when came the time for cricket, • They used to roll my trousers up and used me for the wicket. • I was a dreadful scholar, I found all the lessons hard, • The only thing I knew for sure, was three feet make a yard, • To count to ten I used me fingers, if I needed more, • By getting my shoes and socks off, I could count to twenty four … (stops to count) ... to twenty five • ....... G ......... C • I'm Jake the peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um, • ....................... G • With my extra leg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um, • .................... F • Whatever I did, they said was false, • ................................ C • They said, quick march, I did a quick waltz. • ..................... F ..................... G ......................... C • Then they shouted at me, put your best foot forward - but which foot? • ................... F ................ G ................... C • I said, it's very fine for you, you only got a choice of two. • • But me, I'm Jake the Peg, diddle-iddle-iddle-um… • Lyrics and chords of many of my songs are no longer available, as my website has expired. I am currently posting lyrics to the information panels on all my videos and those that are too long to post in full will be found on my new website: https://raymondsfolkpage.wordpress.com
