The city of Denver planned to reduce flooding and increase park space in the coal neighborhood for this they were sued. • Why? We'll find out at the end of this video but first, if your home or neighborhood is prone to flooding you may need an open drainage system. In today's video, you have the top things you should know. • Number one, what is an open drainage system? Well-open drainage systems also called natural drainage systems consist of uncovered channels or ditches that pick up wastewater and stormwater. Number two, how does open drainage system work? • The open drainage system is an open often grassy or tree-lined channel to which water flows from the surrounding area. The channel will then carry the water to water treatment plants or other outflows. Number three, what are the advantages of open drainage systems? • Well like most stormwater infrastructure. Open drainage systems are designed to control and contain heavy stormwater runoff. This reduces flooding in the surrounding area. • However, for stormwater infrastructure, you have a choice between an open and a closed system. The advantages of an open system are as follows. Cost. Unlined open drainage systems are easier to construct than covered piping. • Thus they are less expensive. Open drains also serve as surface drainage, thus they collect more slit and rubbish than underground pipes and permit increased breakdown of pollutants. Finally, because they are open in design these drainage systems are more accessible and easier to maintain. • Number four, what are the disadvantages of open drainage systems? Well, they were not cheap. While they can be more affordable than close drainage systems. • They still come with an upfront cost. Again though open drainage systems are more manageable than clothes, you will still need to invest time and money in maintaining them, and finally, open drainage systems can contribute to numerous contamination problems when they are properly maintained. Still having said all this. The open drainage system can be not only an asset but a downright beautiful addition to a community. • Consider Denver's Platte to park hill drainage program. This mega project was Denver's largest stormwater management investment in the modern era and included a 1.5-mile greenway with an open drainage system to collect stormwater in one of the city's largest basins. The neighborhoods served by the greenway have long experienced flooding. • Since growth and development through the years have halted the natural flow of water through the area to the south palette river.
