Edge plating and castellation are used for metallization at the sides of a PCB. It is used for EMI-shielding, thermal heat distribution as part of a cooling solution, better current distribution for power electronics, mechanical protection when the PCB slides in a ground connector or to solder a PCB directly on top of another PCB without a connector.
