Along with City Hall and Edinburgh Place it witnessed the past and the present of Hong Kong people in the recent 50 years. We think that the government must take the responsibility of our urban development. It shouldn't be like the past which always demolished and reclaimed. • 8. Wide pan of public forum • 9. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Secretary for Development: • In the beginning of the year 2000, we were saying we hoped to have the Central - Wan Chai Bypass completed by 2009 to solve the traffic congestion in Central and Wan Chai. In fact today we are already suffering from traffic congestion deeply. The roads start to get crowded. However with the most optimistic estimates today, Central - Wan Chai bypass - because of the recent disputes - can only be completed in 2016 at the soonest. • 11. Cutaway of audience speaking • 12. But until the current stage, the message we have had is that things decided cannot be altered, owing to some public administrative reason, rather than any unsolvable technical reasons. • 16. It, along with City Hall and Edinburgh Place, has witnessed the past and the present of Hong Kong's people for the last 50 years. We think that the government must take responsibility for our urban development. It shouldn't continue demolitions and reclamations in the past. Chan said. • But a government official said on Sunday that the removal of Queen's Pier was unavoidable. • Plans are to demolish the pier to make way for a new road to soothe traffic congestion in Hong Kong's Central district. • The government was to have handed over the Queen's Pier site to contractors in February this year for work to begin. • During the British colonial era, the pier welcomed British royal family onshore, including the Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and the late Princess of Wales. • In April, it was officially closed for work to begin. • The demolition of the pier is scheduled by the end of this month. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter:   / ap_archive   • Facebook:   / aparchives    • Instagram:   / apnews   • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
