Does your company use personal information? Don’t collect more than you need, and only hold it as long as you have a business need for it. This is the first lesson in the Start with Security series. • Learn more about this subject on the FTC's website: https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/busin... • ******************************************** • Transcript: • Data breaches are in the headlines and on your mind. The consequences could be disastrous. Some good news-- there are plenty of steps you can take to protect your company's data. The Start with Security video series and resources at business.ftc.gov gov give you valuable lessons for safeguarding your venture, starting with the information you decide to collect. • Tip number one, don't collect personal information you don't need. Here's an example. In one FTC case, a social gaming site asked users for both their email addresses and the passwords to those email accounts. There was no good reason the company needed the passwords too. Having this data on hand only put the company and its customers at risk. • By closely examining the kinds of sensitive information your business is collecting, you can reduce your risks and begin building in security from the start. Another good rule of thumb-- only hold on to information, as long as your business really needs it. Then make sure you get rid of it safely. In another FTC case, a big box retailer learned this the hard way. The company collected customer's credit and debit card information for retail store transactions. • Pretty standard stuff, but it kept this data for up to 30 days after the sale. During this long storage time, hackers cracked the system, stole account data, and used it to make counterfeit credit and debit cards. They went on a spree to the tune of millions in illegal purchases. Safe, timely data disposal could have made the difference. • Remember, criminals can't steal what you don't have. • For more useful tips about building a culture of data security in your business, visit ftc.gov/startwithsecurity. • ******************************************** • Comment Moderation Policy: • We welcome your comments and thoughts about the information on this page.
