Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) became a symbol of Holocaust memory and documentation, and a clear voice in the struggle for human rights. Born in Sighet in Transylvania, Wiesel was sent to Auschwitz in 1944, and from there was sent on a death march to Buchenwald, where he was liberated by the US Army. His parents and younger sister were murdered. After the war, Wiesel turned to journalistic writing, and with time he began literary and reflective writing about the Holocaust and life before it.
