It is regarded as the Old Testament canon by the Orthodox Church. It is also the most important Greek translation of the Old Testament in the history. Legend has it that the Septuagint was translated by 72 Jewish scholars from Hebrew to Greek, and hence its name “the Seventy.” The Septuagint was completed in the third to second century BC, a thousand years earlier than the Masoretic text commonly used by the Protestant Old Testament. The Septuagint appeared because Greek had become the daily language of many Jews at that time, and there were fewer people who could understand Hebrew. The Septuagint not only provides an important basis for Christian doctrines, but most of the Old Testament verses quoted in the New Testament come from the Septuagint.
