The Supreme Allied Commander of World War II, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, gave a powerful speech to troops prepared to embark upon the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944. • It was the largest amphibious invasion in human history. • During the invasion, there were 11,590 Allied aircraft that flew 14,674 sorties. • Before the Allies stormed the Normandy beaches, 15,500 American and 7,900 British troops parachuted into France behind the Nazi lines. • The naval vessels used during the invasion included 1,213 naval combat ships, 4,126 landing ships, 736 ancillary craft and 864 merchant vessels, with 195,700 sailors taking part in the invasion. • Among the Allied troops, there were 132,715 with 57,500 Americans and 75,215 British and Canadian soldiers. • There were 23,250 US troops that fought at Utah Beach and 34,250 stormed Omaha Beach. There were 53,815 British troops at Gold and Sword beaches and 21,400 Canadian troops at Juno Beach. • There were 2,499 dead, 3,184 wounded, 1,928 missing, and 26 captured for the US.
