Completed in 1996, this museum was designed by Oscar Niemeyer, and has the perfect backdrop – the beach! The building looks a lot like a UFO and has been featured a couple of times on the TV show, The Amazing Race. • • 9 - Caught between a rock and a hard place… • No better way to describe this abode situated in France. It’s known as Castle Meur, and it’s not really a castle, but like a cottage squashed between two rocks. It’s been there since 1861, where it was possible to build houses anywhere! The home is still owned by the original family that built it all those years ago, and has been occupied since 2004. • 8 - A good egg… • This is the National Grand Theater in Beijing, and many refer to it as the giant blue egg… no explanations needed. The giant dome is a performing arts center, with space for up to 5,500-people. It’s a titanium-accented glass dome surrounded by an artificial lake. The building was completed in 2007 and designed by Paul Andreu who won an international competition in 1999 to construct the new building. • • 7 - Staying Connected… • This is the Linked Hybrid designed by Steven Holl Architects and is a building complex located in Beijing. The building has received many accolades for its environmental design and sustainable aspects, for example, the building boasts geo-thermal wells for cooling and heating. The building took 6-years to complete and is home to 2,500-people. There are 750 apartments, loads of parking, a hotel, retail space, cinema, kindergarten and a Montessori school. • 6 - Back in time… • The Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandrina, Egypt is something extra-special. This library resembles an angled discus or giant sundial, and it pays tribute to the ancient library of Alexandria that burnt down in the 3rd century. The library once held the largest collection of manuscripts in the world and it’s been said the destruction was purely accidental, done during Caesar's conquest of 48 BC. • 5 - Once upon a time… • The story of the Ideal Palace in France is very much like a fairytale. Ferdinand Cheval was a French postman who started building his dream palace in the late 19th century, and it was a rock that he tripped over that inspired him to begin this project. The rock had a shape that fascinated him, and so began his 34-year project of creating this beautiful palace, much to the amusement of his neighbors and peers. Having no experience in architecture, his palace started taking shape in the most surreal way. He’s taken inspiration from Chinese architecture, as well as Algerian and Northern European. His dream was to be buried there, but sadly, French authorities wouldn’t allow it, so he built his own beautiful vault at a nearby cemetery when he was 80 and is laid to rest there ever since. • • • 4 - Out with new, in with the old… • The Lloyd's Building in London looks like it got its inspiration from shiny steampunk / industrial elements, so a great combination of the old and the new! It was designed by Richard Rogers and has been nicknamed the inside-out building. The reason for that is that the water pipes and staircases are located on the outside of the building. It took 8-years to complete the building, and has since been used as the backdrop or location for so many films, including The Avengers, Mamma Mia and Guardians of the Galaxy. • 3 - Puzzle it out… • This fun tourist attraction is located near Wanaka, New Zealand and it’s been around since 1973 where it started as a single-story maze and has grown dramatically since then! Stuart Landsborough's Puzzling World is full of optical illusions, puzzling rooms and the most incredible world-first 3D maze. Around a quarter of a million people visit this spot every year! • 2 - Breaking the mold… • Architect Thom Mayne is well-known for doing this, and its thanks to him that the Southern California Institute of Architecture was formed in 1972. He has designed buildings all around the world, including the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas completed in 2012. The museum is layered in textured concrete panels, sitting on top of plinth planted with Texas grasses. It’s a great place to visit with the kids, with many interactive permanent and temporary displays on offer. • • 1...
