At the turn of the 20th century, coal mining was in full swing across the globe. Demand for the fossil fuel had boomed and the mines were running at full tilt in an attempt to keep up. This often came at the expense of safety and many lives had been lost to collapses, explosions and gas exposure. • In the early hours of the 10th of March, 1906, one of these coal mines, located in France, was already running, with almost 1800 workers down in the tunnels. The miners would have been busy striking the seams of coal, the naked flames of their lamps illuminating the dark walls of the vast complex of underground passages. • And then, a deep rumble could be heard, getting louder and louder. The earth shook beneath their feet, bits of coal, rock and dirt began to fall from above them, a surge of heat...and then nothing. • An explosion had ripped through the mine. 2 thirds of the workforce inside were killed instantly, and many were still trapped, unable to escape through the collapsed tunnels. 20 days later, 13 haggard and exhausted survivors emerged from the wreckage. • How had they survived?
