The Secret tunnel at Thanjavur Sadar Mahal Palace is from the period of Marathas. It was constructed by King Serfoji II. It is a 6 kms long tunnel which ends at Punnainallur Mariamman Temple. The underground passage is told to be so big that horses can be fitted in. The passage were not too narrow. King Serfoji II's Shikar Mahal on those days was told to be somewhere in or around the secret tunnel. The passage passes through the Maratha Darbar hall.
