Composed in 2000, this virtuosic piece unfolds across two large movements, each of which traverses a wide range of expressive territory. The music is equal parts thorny and lyrical, featuring both dazzlingly fast passagework and singing melodic material. For me, its defining aspect is a vivid sense of dialogue. Each instrument adds its distinctive personality to an urgent musical conversation. In the first movement, I hear a kind of musical argument: Individual instrumental voices gain support or face opposition as the narrative unfolds. The horn plays a special role throughout, interrupting the dialogue at key moments—so much so, that Penderecki actually asks the horn player to stand up and move partway through, playing at a distance from the rest of the group. By the end of the work, these individual musical voices find a way to come together in a more meditative musical texture, and the horn player rejoins the rest of the ensemble. Maybe this gesture represents reconciliation, or perhaps the music expresses a shared sense of regret for the harsh tones taken earlier. Whatever the case, Penderecki’s Sextet has rightfully earned a lasting place in the repertoire. • —Nick DiBerardino • November 2019 • Winds and Strings Tour • Tour Performances: • Woodmere Art Museum (Philadelphia) • National Galleryof Art (Washington, D.C.) • Carnegie Music Hall (Pittsburgh) • Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia) • Jewish Community Center MetroWest (West Orange, N.J.) • Learn more about this work:    • Winds   Strings Recital, Intro: PENDE...   • #CurtisIsHere
