In this video, we explore a surprising new discovery about Tyrannosaurus rex: these apex predators may have been cannibals! A study by paleontologists from the U.S. and Canada found bite marks on T. rex bones that match the teeth of other T. rex, revealing that this “king of the dinosaurs” didn’t just prey on other species—it may have also eaten its own kind. The evidence, uncovered in museum fossil collections by Yale researcher Nick Longrich, includes deep gouges on foot and arm bones, indicating feeding behavior. However, whether these marks are from scavenging or the aftermath of a fierce battle remains a mystery. Similar to today’s carnivores that scavenge as well as hunt, T. rex may have found sustenance on fallen rivals. • This rare instance of dinosaur cannibalism provides a new window into the ancient ecosystems and feeding habits of one of history’s largest land predators. Unlike modern carnivores that often hunt in packs, T. rex likely operated solo, and scavenging on dead T. rex individuals could have been a strategy to eliminate competition while securing a meal. Only one other dinosaur species, Majungatholus, shows signs of cannibalism, but this discovery could point to more frequent cannibalistic behavior among other ancient species. This research, published in PLoS ONE, offers a new perspective on the mysterious and brutal lives of these prehistoric giants. • Sources: • • Yale University News on T. rex cannibalism discovery • • Longrich, N., et al.
