The sounds of a Fan-tailed Cuckoo calling in the Australian bush. Fan-tailed Cuckoos make a few different sounds, the most commonly heard is the ‘peeeer’ descending trill. Although Fan-tailed Cuckoos sing most frequently in spring and summer, these trilling calls can be heard throughout the year and even at night. Male Fan-tailed Cuckoos also make soft mournful ‘p-whee’ whistles, often when another bird is nearby. Female Fan-tailed Cuckoos make loud, shrill ‘chireee’ calls. • The Fan-tailed Cuckoo calls in this video spectrogram were recorded in Mummel Gulf National Park, New South Wales, Australia. • The Fan-tailed Cuckoo (Cacomantis flabelliformis) is a medium-sized cuckoo found in Australia, New Guinea and a number of Pacific islands.
