Less painful than it looks and sounds. • The achilles tendon is the most common tendon to tear, often in the mid substance area (3-6 cm proximal to the calcaneal insertion). Typically effects active people in their 30-40's, and more common in males than females (5.5:1). History of chronic achilles tendinopathy, obesity, sudden load increase, and certain antibiotics or prolonged corticosteroid use may increase the risk of tear. • In my case, none of the risk factors were present. I am not really sure why it happened to me, especially with this exercise. As a physiotherapist, I demonstrate this exercise a lot, even more complex ones without regularly tearing things... A better warm up could have helped. It is also a foot I had surgery on when I was 19, resulting in a slight calf strength deficit compared to the right. Overall, this is NOT a dangerous exercise, and more of a fluke injury. • If you think you have ruptured your achilles, please seek immediate medical attention.
