So, can the latest iteration continue that sort of success? • To find out, Vicky Parrott has a go in the E-Power version of the new car. This has a 1.5-litre petrol engine, but interestingly - not to mention, unconventionally - it never drives the wheels. Instead, it merely generates electricity to power the two electric motors - one on each axle to give four-wheel drive - which combine to deliver 201bhp, and a (surprisingly average) WLTP fuel economy figure of around 45mpg. • The X-Trail can be had with either five- or seven seats, and for the four-wheel-drive E-Power version tested, prices start at around £45,000.
